Amazingly designed Communist era Czechoslovakian cigarette packets

When smoking was awesome, 1948–1989 Jun 26, 2009 at 07:50
So we all know that smoking is bad and gives you lung cancer and will kill you and blah, blah, blah. We get it. But as Mad Men demonstrates on a weekly basis, smoking is also really cool. Sorry. It is.

While we're not suggesting anyone take up his horrible addiction / government sanctioned activity, these vintage Czech cigarette packets certainly make it seem like good idea. Hell, it would almost be worth smoking (again) if you could produce one of these packets at party and enjoy the smooth, crisp flavour of a Technoexport, Dashhund or Investa.

Probably a good thing today's packets feature monstrous adverts telling you all about your impending cancer fun.

All photos taken by John Citizen at the William Morris Euro HQ.

I smoked for eight years before quittng. It was awesome - the smoking, I mean. Watching Mad Men (and seeing these packets) makes me wish I'd never stopped... Also, Techno Export looks like it could be a Juan Atkins LP cover.

Damn Mikolai, i could not agree with you any more on everything you just said.

id rather see this on packets then the mouth olsers and foot diseased ones, i go to work and sell just as much as before the horried ones,,plus it brings sad memories to people who survived or have lost loved ones,.spare a thought and put sexy photos back on. it comes down to personal choice really

I love that they can still advertise cigarettes in US magazines and the basic concepts really haven't moved on since the 80s, e.g. 'the cool clean taste of Alpine'. Photo of happy couple set against tropical island with azure waters.

I remember when Joe Camel and Marlboro man billboards were everywhere including advertising on the radio and tv that's been banned since 1999.
False New Lounger
even the camel advertisements were great!
