Richmond Hill, Queens is being roamed by a crews on
turbo-customised bikes. The bikes don't have motors, or flashy wheels,
or even spokey dokes; instead they have stereo systems and whopping
speakers attached. It looks a little kooky (and a bit unstable) but
also seems like it could be one of the most fun things to witness.
The kids getting into it are mostly teenagers from Guyanese and Trinidadian backgrounds, and turning bicycles into boom boxes is popular in those cultures. The customised pushies have had lot of time and money invested in them (up to around $4 thousand) and, dare I say, put the BMX Bandits on the passe list.
Find out more about these crews and their contraptions here.
