Although this album was released internationally last year and you’ve all probably downloaded it by now, for those who still rightly enjoy purchasing their music, the debut long player from not only DJ Mehdi, but also Ed Banger Records has finally hit our shores, and it’s definitely been worth the wait. While it seems that Ed Banger has become the ultimate hype label, and much of the time provides an excellent example of style over substance, DJ Mehdi has managed to forge his own niche, showing the diversity and production skills that only years of experience could provide. Lucky Boy displays this range to excellent effect, skipping between early 80s synth based hip-hop in ‘Saharian Break’ to the spaced-out opener ‘Busy Being Born’, and the Prince-esque funk of ‘Hot-O-Momo’. It is Medhi’s ability to deftly traverse a variety of genres with extreme precision and awareness that makes Lucky Boy one of the most interesting offerings on the Ed Banger label to date.
