Espers "This string of epics is not exactly one for the ‘on-the-go’ playlist of the iPod, and apart from the occasional soothing harmony, II is laboured and uneventful."
Espers
II By: Dimitri Kalagas

You’ve got folk music and then there’s Philadelphian sextet Espers’ second album (imaginatively titled II) - perhaps best described as baroque-folk. Atmospheric strings and percussion glumly trudge through a tale of a once proud ‘Land-of-Opportunity’ now engulfed in fear and self-loathing. This string of epics is not exactly one for the ‘on-the-go’ playlist of the iPod, and apart from the occasional soothing harmony, II is laboured and uneventful. Maybe if you’re part of a history loving cult that enjoys re-enacting village scenes from the colonial era and you have a penchant for Donovan then you’ll dig it. Unfortunately for the rest of us, there’s a dizzying myriad of music at our fingertips these days, so why would you taint that carefully constructed playlist with average fluff.
