Mr Moonshine - "Mr Simpson, don't you worry. I saw an episode of Matlock in a bar last night. The sound was down, but I think I got the gist of it."

Making walls canvases Aug 09, 2008 at 08:09
Melbourne is one lucky town – not only do we have great bars and coffee meccas, cool pubs and places to chillax but we can also lay claim to some of the best damn artistic talent in the world. Anyone who’s had a chance to stroll down Caledonian Lane, Hosier Lane or just about any other laneway in the heart of the city and the surrounding suburbs is sure to have seen this creative occupation on the walls and doors before them, seemingly sucking you into a world where someone else’s imagination has run rampant.

One such artist responsible for Melbourne’s creative fortunes is simply known as Meggs. His monsters, big toothed and scary or growling and fierce are easily spotted once you know what you’re looking for, but his abilities don’t end with such creepy creatures. No sir – Meggs also has a flair for heroes of the super and comic variety.

The latest exhibition from this creative monolith is being held in conjunction with Stussy. Titled ‘Own Worst Enemy...’ this work aims to further explore Meggs obsession with ‘duality of self’. The paintings in this series depict the subversion of our childhood heroes, and alter egos, by expressing their struggle with what could be best described as their more ‘human’ attributes.

Head to Don't Come Gallery in Melbourne from 25th September to 11th October or check out some of Meggs' work in the attached gallery.
