Nature rules! Dec 31, 2008 at 01:23
So, I'm still convinced that some of these photos of auroras are Photoshopped, but nature can do some very clever things. And, nerdy as it may be, I think these photos are pretty amazing.

Here's the nature lesson; auroras occur when "solar particles are thrown into space and travel for about two to three days at a rate of 300 to 1000 kilometres per second and then reach earth’s outer magnetic field. At this point, the clouds of particles are pulled towards the northern and southern magnetic poles. As they are being pulled towards the poles they are stopped by our atmosphere colliding with other present particles."

Sure. And that's what makes all the pretty colours.

Picture and information from colorlovers.com.

I am not so sure that it is photoshopped as the Northern Lights are a phenomenal and wondrous natural occurrence that simply blow my mind every time I see images of them. They make you think that it is not real, but they really are that vivid in colour. Yeah Mother Nature.

The people who have seen them say they are as incredible as you can see there!!!!

Having attempted to photograph the southern lights (aurora australis ) with less success than these northern shots I would say these aren't photoshopped. They are however incredibly good. Must have been using quite fast film or a high ISO if digital as there is no star movement and the aurora itself has been frozen and they can move quite alot.

Hmmm, nice observation from an obvious photographer!
