Like other fantastic kindred spirits such as The Shins, Midlake and Calexico, Iron and Wine continues to finely craft folk tunes that conjure pleasant dreams of pioneering the West, meandering on horseback through valleys, deserts and mountains. Perhaps you might tip your cap to a purdy lady as you ride through town.

You don’t rock out to this stuff, but you can definitely relax into its groove. Snooze in a hammock to it, use it as a backdrop for a friendly gathering, but also actively listen and take in the carefully plotted details and humbling effortless charm. Often hushed harmonies waltz with plucked guitars, meticulously tender slide guitar and sparing percussion, and for good measure, occasionally some piano, hand claps and harpsichord are thrown in. Really, this is just darn tootin’ good song writing and happy trails await those who listen.
