Taking photographs in and around New York, Jill Freedman took photos of the gritty, grimy and dark; prostitutes, homeless people, poor kids, racism, division, crime, and sadness. She also managed to capture some innocence and beauty, stuck somewhere in-between all the rest.
The bolshy blonde stomped into intense, angry, sometimes violent and dangerous situations armed with her camera and an ambition to be like André Kertész. Her photos are part art and part documentary and show New York's past in all its glory, terror, and strangeness. Now 68-years-old, Freedman lives in Harlem.
