Joaquin Phoenix quits and turns to rapping
<< Back
I said 'a hip hop' Feb 20, 2009 at 12:03
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Unfortunately the Joaquin Phoenix team have taken Phoenix's recent David Letterman interview off the web. It is now, no longer available for viewing. This is indeed a shame, because I would have liked to hear your sentiments on the issue.

On 11 Feb 09 Phoenix was a guest on the Dave Letterman Show. Unfortunately his mind couldn't make it, so his body took one for the team. He was supposed to be on the show promoting his new movie 'Two Lovers', but it seems even grutting was too much effort.

'Two Lovers' director James Gray, who also directed the 34-year-old star in The Yards and We Own The Night, is concerned that he played a role in Phoenix's recent behaviour saying that Phoenix's character experiments with rap in the movie, which is loosely based on Gray's own life experience.

James Gray:

"I found out he's built a recording studio in his house and he's working with Diddy. I tried to talk him out of it. He got very angry."

He's working with Diddy? P. Diddy? The artist formerly known as Puff Daddy? WTF.

After Phoenix announced his career change decision, on David Letterman, he was mocked by the host and studio audience.

Joaquin said: "I have been working on my music. I am doing hip-hop music.

"This isn't a joke. Why are they laughing?"

As the laughter grew louder, an upset-looking Joaquin insisted: "I am serious about this. What is it with this maniacal laughter in here? I don't get it. Is this supposed to be fun?"

While many believe the actor is mentally unstable others wonder whether the whole thing is a charade, a hoax set up by Phoenix himself.

Here is his brief interview with E! Entertainment Channel. Casey Affleck seems to be as confused as the rest of us.

Here is Joaquin's debut as a rapper.. in which he takes a rather sudden trip.. You know what they say about first impressions...

Falls off stage.

Greener pastures? Fingers crossed

I saw his Letterman interview and it was disturbing to say the least. The guy looks like he's gone off the deep end in a serious way. It was depressing to watch- not even funny really. SO horrible I cant even make a joke about it.

I'm just glad to see hip-hop has saved yet another life...

if this is a joke then joaquin phoenix is my new favourite all time funniest man in history! i hope he keeps this facade up for months, filmclips, press releases, and then just admits it was a joke. it would be faaarrrrkinngg hilarious!!
True Respect
Casey Affleck if filming a documentary about Joaquin's hip hop "career". Shit's definitely being set up, I reckon the dude's a genius. It's like the whole Borat thing taken to another level, cause he's actually playing himself. Either that or he's completely bat-shit crazy.

his appearance on Letterman is a great watch.

I actually really felt for him on Letterman, and I will be sooo surprised if it is an act. I think he's just lost the plot.

If you missed it the highlights from the Letterman spot are here http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/11/joaquin-phoenixs-bizarre_n_166229.html

I though it was Dj's and not hip-hop that saved lives ryz?
False Senior Member
ah yes but behind every good DJ is his MC, so they save lives by assocation

I saw the letterman thing before it got pulled and it was like watching the Office for the first time. Utterly cringeworthy but you had to keep looking. I hope you're right Dimitri, and if you are it will be one hell of a stunt.

only the extroverted ones are in front Notorious. the humble ones sit on a jason recliner behind the wheels of steel.

Casey's making a doco on it? You've got to be kiddin gme. Even he didn't seem convinced. The last thing you want is a wavering sidekick.

I really hope it is a joke... The interview on letterman was a tad disturbing...

I read somewhere that it was all just some mad dada performance art piece that was thought up by one of his friends. If it isn't, the guy's lost it completely. If it is a dada piece, he's still pretty nuts.
True Respect
Nuts and bored. You gotta be pretty bored with life to think up (and carry out) this kind off all body, all life act. Whatever the case, dude is seriously f$#&%ked up.
True Advanced Member
It would be nice to think he is taking the piss out of the Entertainment industry otherwise I am way concerned about the dude..
True Respect
I think we are all agreed.
False Advanced Member
Yeah I believe it's all a joke or some big project, it has to be surely, he can't have lost his sh*t that much. So I can't wait to see it all in the end, there ought to be an awesome twist :D lol - Jake OXOX

He's on the drug, he's on the drug, he's on the drug that killed River Phoenix... Too early?
True Member
I really hope it's a joke because then I'd would have to set up a shrine to him in my house. But I'm biding my time, just in case...
False Respect
ryz, considering the song was released in'95, id say no.
False Advanced Member
He's still SO super-duper hot. Ryz, never too soon.
False Senior Member
Oh please go ahead and do laugh, not cry! Remember in Hollywood, trash is the new treasure....Look at Amy and Britney...both are trashy but both are successful....He is pulling our strings, just like Paris pulls the purses of the naive tweens!!

I'm still awaiting for Joaquin to announce to the world this is actually a got ya!!
