| Japan’s love hotels and their handcuff obsession |

A Hello Kitty room? Subway train? Pirate ship? While it’s no secret they do things a little differently over in Japan, it takes something like the ‘love hotel’ phenomenon to really hammer the point home (no pun intended). [Ed's note: as if that wasn't intended.]
Set up for couples looking to have ‘happy endings’ together, there are an estimated 40,000 such hotels in Japan, utilised by about 2% of the population on any given day. A reaction to cramped housing conditions and limited privacy, these rooms are usually rented by the hour via an entirely automated process IE: teller machines.
While we have ‘ask no questions’ motels in the west, they’re usually kinda grim and functional. That’s not the case in Japan. After all, if you’re going to use your lunch-break for ‘romance’, you may as well have a bit of fun with it. Maybe some role-play? Whatever floats your boat... just as long as there are handcuffs and chains nearby.
