Parklife 2009 Melbourne – photos and review
Mr Zany, Madame Wacky and their children Quirky, Kooky and Munted were all on the loose at Melbourne's Parklife on Saturday. Amongst the generic fashions (oh, hi there floral crop-top and dirty plimsolls) there were a couple of delights (whoever you were in the geometric onesie and all those necklaces, bravo – you didn't even look like a douche).
Kids from all over Melbourne were in full force; dancing, texting, saying "I'm on the left, near the pillar, no, near the pillar halfway back near the bar with the thing on the top!" and "profile pic!", chewing the inside of their cheeks, starting fights, starting fires, being carted off on stretchers to the delight and applause of their friends. But along with the poorly behaved, there were thousands who genuinely wanted to sing along with La Roux, dance their faces off to Empire of the Sun and lose their collective shit during The Rapture.
The Junior Boys delighted at the small Earth stage. Little Boots was the best dressed (sorry, Luke Steele). The Cool Kids owned the afternoon at the Fire stage – being bum-rushed and maintaining their composure and chivalry and jumping amongst the crowd for 'Pump Up The Volume'. Metronomy worked their tried and true schtick – lights on their tops and dedicating a song to the ladies. Lady Sovereign was her usually bratty self. La Roux pulled a gigantic crowd – all of whom sang along in a cult-like way. Empire of the Sun and their amazing dancers sent the kids properly crazy (big ups to the giant guitars during 'We Are The People'). The Rapture, despite not pulling the biggest audience, were the highlight of the day – 'Get Myself Into It' and 'Out of the Races onto the Tracks' thrilled us to tiny bits and pieces and the nice security man let us dance in the pit.
On the way out, people were razzed up by Parklife in both the worst and the best possible ways.
BEST: The Rapture's Luke Jenner's live singing voice. Flawless.
WORST: The 40-something man passed out and vomiting on the hill. Too far, old sir.
FUNNIEST: A tie between the girls in the toilet line talking about the "positiveness" they bring to each-other, the one who said "UGH, bored of dumb DJs" and a certain music editor who said "I'm so high, I just wet myself." He was kidding. We think.
