I think everybody can agree that anything crochet is cute. But crochet
animals? Very, very cute. Patricia Waller's crochet animals are so cute
that even when it's a shark with a bloodied limb in its mouth, a pair
of conjoined teddy twins, a bunny stabbed by a carrot, they're still adorable.
We love them. Just not too sure how little Jemima's going to feel about
receiving a bleeding kitty with its guts hanging out for her fourth
birthday.
Though not all macabre artworks (there are happily
nude aliens, pink elephants, a monkey on a banana boat) Waller's pieces
have been exhibited in Europe, the USA, and Asia in indoor and outdoor
exhibits. She seemingly focusses on the contrast and the fine line
between comfort and fear, humorous and tragic, syrupy sweet and
repulsive, precision and mutilation...
Perhaps she and Shannon Gerard
(creator of the crochet rude bits) should team up and really shake up
the world of crochet. No nana blankies here, more like a murderous
unicorn stabbing a teddy through the heart with its horn. Really. Check
out more here.
