The kind people at Galliano have given us a LOT of booze. Kidding. The kind people at Galliano are supporting Lifelounge for the next six weeks and together we're offering up an Italian fiesta – so prepare for some Italiano flavoured treats on Lifelounge.com as well as party galleries. It will all live on Galliano's very own page within Lifelounge. It's in the computer. Viva l'italia!
Clever Italian Invention #1: The Piaggio Calendar
To be a classic summertime dreamgirl one needs to fill a lot of criterion.
First, one must have perfectly sun-kissed skin – no fake tan, but a natural dewy glow. Second, one must have amazing hair (it doesn't have to be natural, but it needs to appear so). Third, one must own at least one gingham or floral playsuit, a pair of (clean) plimsolls or brown leather sandals. Fourth, one must own a wicker picnic basket that one fills with cheeses, fig paste, grapes, watermelon, raspberries, homemade lemonade, lemon cake and sandwiches (at least four different kinds, preferably two choices of bread). Fifth, one must have a wireless on which to play summertime tunes (Chicago's 'Saturday in the Park' is a good place to start). Finally, one needs a Vespa, freckles, and to smell of daisies and sea air.
Long before Pirelli photographed dreamgirls to help sell their products, Piaggio (the Italian manufacturer of scooters including Piaggio, Vespa, Gilera, and Derbi) were two steps ahead. The world went a little crazy for scooters post-WWII and the first Piaggio calendar appeared in 1951. It featured beautiful women being wholesome and classy and shiny scooters. The calendars got cheekier as time went on but never wavered from the winning combination that was sisters and scooters.
