Formed from the union of twin vocalists, Claudia and Alejandra Deheza, and ex-Secret Machines guitarist, Benjamin Curtis, School Of Seven Bells (apparently named after a mythical South American pick-pocket academy) have come from a rich musical heritage. And it shows on their debut, Alpinisms, with their beautifully crafted, gauzy and ethereal pop tracks washing over you like a calming wave, commencing from opening track ‘Iamundernodisguise’.
While the otherworldly vocal harmonies from the Deheza twins (swathed amongst gossamer, My Bloody Valentine-esque instrumentals) are enough to will you into a Zen-like state, when combined with the elements of electronica and folk inherent in the album, an intricacy in the production becomes apparent, creating a sense of intrigue without ever compromising its accessibility. Standout tracks include the mantra-like ‘Iamundernodisguise’ and the epic slow build of ‘Half Asleep’. But, essentially, Alpinisms as a whole is a form of aural therapy – soothing, soaring and possessing the ability to take you on a sonic journey throughout its duration, which is a refreshing notion in itself.
So review blah blah aside, New York based School Of Seven Bells have decided to grace our shores for the first time, which is excellent news, as the response to their live shows has ranged from great to amazing from very reliable sources, so really you’d be a bit daft to miss them.
