Smoke, mirrors and bullshit from the tobacco industry
<< Back
Campaigns to hide the hazards of smoking Oct 23, 2008 at 12:13
Remember the good ole days when brands could get away with blatantly lying to your face about the benefits of their products. They'd even go to the trouble of enlisting "professionals" and "science" to endorse and support their bullshit. Stuff like that never happens these days... never at all... Well OK, maybe it does, but no-one was as comfortable swimming in their own shit as the tobacco industry. They would happily get dentistS, doctors, nurses, babies, actors, singers, penguins, whatever it took to lead you to believe that smoking was actually great for your health and quality of life in general.

The Stanford School of Medicine has collected and archived an absolutely massive gallery of original advertisements that the tobacco industry used to hide the hazards of smoking. All are available at decent resolution as well. I've collected a few which you can click and view to the right of this post and for more visit Not a Cough in A Carload.

I don't get it, if you were getting a sore throat from smoking, whouldn't you conclude that it's bad for you? Or is ti just easy for me to say that knowing all that we know now. It's awesome how they all try to persuade you with their bold statements. Not subtle lol A truely iconic time in advertising! - Jake OXOXO

"Throat Sensitive? Smoke Kool." Well, yes - your throat will become sensitive from all the smoke if you do...but that's ok, because you'll look 'kool'.
