Stephanie Downey Fashion Feature
Words by Annie Fox

Fat has been responsible for unearthing some of the very best independent fashion from both here and overseas. It’s no wonder then that Fat staff member and new label creator, Stephanie Downey has managed a product so finely tuned it’s easily at home among Fat’s more established brands. Her style is softly spoken, but unforgettable, which makes for a combination as yet unseen.

LL: Tell us a bit about you and your self-titled label.
SD: I have always gained the most satisfaction from making things – it used to be drawings and artwork and then I got into sewing, it’s really fun to wear something you made. And clothes are quite useful.
Each piece has a bit of character, reminiscent of the concept behind the range. My clothes are quite subtle, often in black and white – I think you have to look closely to appreciate their originality.

LL: And what about your current range?
SD: Inspiration was drawn from images of debutantes from rural Victoria over the past century. Teenagers transformed, stepping out in their awkwardly glamorous attire – indulging in a seemingly instinctive desire for sophistication. Each vulnerable girl is hoping to appear stunning in her dream dress. I created a collection based on the associations we have of these events: lace, ruffles, satin and chiffons – evening embellishment at its most hideous! The more casual items of the wardrobe were re-interpreted to subtly reference the vision of a debutante.

LL: What other things inspire you?
SD: Memories, people and places, clothes, films, photographs, my friends’ and family’s stories.

LL: What do you love about fashion?
SD: I love the private aspiration people have to be fashionable, and I love the mistakes … that style is such a personal and vulnerable thing. I love the excitement, optimism and hope provided by the ‘perfect’ outfit.

LL: What’s been your career highlight?
SD: Just that my friends (people I admire) actually buy my clothes!

LL: So where do you see Stephanie Downey in five years from now?
SD: It’s hopefully going to be a good excuse to travel! So maybe stocking and working in other countries?
