In his series The Land of the Free, photographer Steve Schofield
explores the idea of fandom and the British obsession with American pop
culture. He depicts his subjects in their very British homes, dresssed
in the kind costumes they would usually wear to the gathering of like
minded folk, like a Star Wars or Trekky convention.
The work makes a political reference
to globalisation and America's ongoing ability to infiltrate all
cultures via various channels of media. Much of daily life is
influenced by 'Americanisms' whether through language, food or fashion,
which can often be traced back to music videos, the Hollywood film
industry, advertising and American sit-coms. - Steve Schofield
