The Book of Revelation Art Feature
Words by: Annie Fox

Written & Directed by: Ana Kokkin
Based on the novel by: Rupert Thomson

The Book of Revelation follows Daniel (Tom Long), as he struggles in an unfamiliar, often unbearable world after his kidnapping. Quickly he plummets into isolation, buried beneath his dark secret, unable to seek help or refuge – even from those he loves.

Whether or not you leave this film feeling it has achieved, there is no doubt that you leave with it’s mark permanently branded onto you. Kokkinos cleverly challenges our perception of gender and sexual crime (minus preachy overtones and the expected gender bending). The dark and malicious yet sensual ritual of rape at the hands of a woman is the films real highlight. Performances (both from cast and director) here are spectacular.

The film has its slower, more awkward moments; some welcome others frustrating. Perhaps in stark contrast to its highs, the lows seem all the more irritating and unforgivable. Overall however, there are several moments of this film so brilliant they make Revelation unmissable. Scacchi’s performance as Daniel’s mentor, Isabel is one such unmissable treat.

The Book of Revelation is in cinemas everywhere from September 7th.
