The Boombox Project by Lyle Owerko

Regular readers of Lifelounge would be familiar with the works of the very talented Canadian born, now New York photographer Lyle Owerko. Earlier this year we featured his East African electronic market series entitled Radio Simba in the Food Edition of Lifelounge Magazine. He's recently updated his website with a series of images documenting some of the iconic vintage boomboxes from the 80s that helped to define popular culture of a generation. Amazing machines and amazing images. Check out samples from the series below and for more of Lyle Owerko's genius, visit his blog here or website here.

One day I'd like to see some appreciation for the faux boombox, my sister and I had a not-so-ghetto blaster that had lame pretendy graffiti on it and a double cassette! Double! We could tape Rhythm Nation for all our friends. Shit was off the chain.

Did it have high-speed dubbing? Had to have high-speed dubbing...

Of course. It was a genius piece of technology.

I can't believe i had the same one as The Boombox Project - 11 back in '83. I was 13 and used to think i was the coolest walking to school with it on my shoulder...

Those were the days - When audio equipment companies like Sony actually sold you equipment to copy tape-to-tape (dual cassette) as a -feature-. Now they cripple their hardware and plant PC disabling software in their CDs and charge for the pleasure!

Like his style... I still remember the tapes, they were great! This is part of history!
