A lot of secrecy and controversy has surrounded Ms Lauryn Hill, once a household name as part of the Fugees and then for her solo career. Stories seemed to begin when she sold a massive 12 million copies of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill; the singer, MC, songwriter and musician was vocally disappointed that it sold to a mostly white audience and she began to shy away from the spotlight. Seemingly cemented as an entertainer to be reckoned with in the late 90s, Hill apparently turned down roles in Charlie's Angels and The Bourne Identity. Her MTV Unplugged album sold poorly and she can be heard saying "I'm crazy and deranged. I'm emotionally unstable." on the recording. Whispers got louder and louder and Hill was, in the eyes of the public, having a meltdown.
For years Ms Hill has lived with Rohan Marley (Bob Marley's son) and pair have five children together. This year she's been back in the spotlight because of her appearance at a live show in Amsterdam in July where she looked very different from how her fans remembered her; crazy make-up, kooky clothes and an unkempt afro. But it has to be said, if she were another artist would she be praised for 're-inventing' herself?
Insisting on being called Ms Hill instead of Lauryn, she's finally come at us with some brand new music, the first in forever and is said to be working on a new album.
