The most recogniseable face of the last century - Che Guevara

Over forty years since his death and the Argentine Marxist revolutionary, Che Guevara would arguably still be the most recogniseable face of the last 100 years... The famous image taken by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda in 1960 of the revolutionary, for decades has been preproduced on  posters, t-shirts and even currency and still to this day is the symbol of rebellion and revolution worldwide. As famous as it is, Korda (now deceased) hasn't received any royalties for it (although in 2000 vodka brand Smirnoff was sued for the miss use of the image, however Korda donated the settlement of $50K to the Cuban health care system).

When asked about the illicit use of his image Corda said "As a supporter of the ideals for which Che Guevara died, I am not averse to its reproduction by those who wish to propagate his memory and the cause of social justice throughout the world, but I am categorically against the exploitation of Che's image for the promotion of products such as alcohol, or for any purpose that denigrates the reputation of Che".

Below are some of the less famous images of one of history's most influential figures.

I wonder how we would view Che Guevara now if he was still on team Castro now and hadn't died young and handsome?
True Respect
Handsome? I think he suffered from 'bad teenage beard' syndrome. Check out Camilo Cienfuegos, now THAT'S a beard!
False Respect
So he's no Gael García Bernal, but had some handsome.

The beard equivalent of a comb-over = handsome? Ba-bow.

he dad have a pretty bad case of mange going on. Still a legend though.

OK Freeak, just for you: I wonder how we would view Che Guevara now if he was still on team Castro now and hadn't died young?
True Respect
Glad you asked Katie. To be honest, I'm still wondering how we view Mr Castro. So, technically, you're asking me to hypothesize on something that's already nebulous. The fact of the matter, though, is that he did die young. Which, for him was unfortunate, but was very fortunate for his legacy. Hence the over-abundance of Che-shirts flooding market stalls and Of Ya Tree stores from here to Camden Town. If he was still on Team Castro though, I can only assume that they would have been targeted as a bigger threat than Middle East terrorism by the US government and treated as such by said organisation. And his beard would be grey and wispy(er).
False Respect
I appreciate that you still brought the beard into it and managed to mention Off Ya Tree too. Exquisite.

It took me a few minutes to remember the name of the shop. All I could think of was "Bongs r Us" for a while there.

i thing that was worth a couple of bucks.

My hero!!!!!!! He got away from Castro to go fight in the jungle. Not a Commy if you didn't like how the revolution was turning out, I bet you could've got your gun and settled it, hence the early death.

I think banksy had a very interesting point that the image of Che Guevera has become a consumer product in that it is easier to wear a tee shirt and be trendy then it is to understand what he was actually about and stood for and in doing so became a faded part of pop culture like Marilyn Monroe.
