The sold out world of celebrity product endorsements in Japanese commercials
<< Back
From Arnie to Wham, they've all done it Sep 30, 2008 at 12:04
The Japanese seem to have a particular knack for coercing Western celebrities into the kind of cheesy product endorsements that most of them wouldn't be caught dead doing on their home soil. None more comfortable with this kind of whoredome than The Governator himself, whose list of  endorsements over the last 20 years is absolutely enormous, although he's far from on his own. There is seemingly a queue of western celebs waiting to rake in the Japanese marketing dollar and the cash must be particularly good. It reminds me of Bill Murray's character trying to promote the relaxing qualities of Suntory in Lost in Translation, it's awkward and embarrassing yet so many have done it and supposedly Japan can't get enough.

Thankfully for Youtube and Japander.com these kind of embarrassing celebrity endorsements are available for the rest of the world to judge and enjoy. Below is a collection of some doozies and for more visit Japander.com

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Bruce Willis

Ben Stiller

Wham

Michael Jackson

Hulk Hogan

Rick Astley

Michael J Fox

Madonna

Mitsuya Cider got Rick-rolled! My personal favourite is still Joey's ad for man lipstick on Friends.

The Michael J Fox one was directed by Benny Hill.

Some of Arnie's finest acting right there. Also, you guys forgot Travolta: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=tZdYpw8KzJQ
