Huntington Beach, California
10/18/2009 10:05:40 PM

We took the trip to Huntington, not specifically to visit Hidden Valley, but it was a highlight.

Ed has a long history with this place and has been documenting it for years, he has some great/creepy stories about it. He also has pins in his fingers

Someone's den. As it is mostly good weather you can stay here a while. It wasn't even off the track.

Looking for trails.

Ed with a Gonz tile painting.

I think this was a Leigh Ledare (is that right Ed) on the left and a misprint from Deformer on the right.

Remember the skater Lenny Kirk? He did this drawing. Amazing.

Nice Ed Sculpture.

Huntington Beach Pier.

California, Baby!

Multi-use objects? I don't think so.

Leaving the USA

Good Bye New York City - that's downtown Manhattan in the middle of the frame.

Don't know where this guy popped up from, just out south of New York City

And into LA County

That's the piles of gold they keep in the hills. The mirage of success.

Ooh la.

Did anyone mention the smog?

You can almost make out downtown.

Now for the transit lounge blues.

Incredible reservoir on top of LA.

Our gracious tour guide and old old pal Felix Bloxsom.

Hilarious 'secret' garage. "you see, if you just pull this book out here..."
Trompe L'oeil what?!

Case Study House Number 8 - Charles and Ray Eames - The Palisades, California
9/30/2009 6:23:32 PM

We visited the Eames Case Study House.

It was built entirely of catalogue bought prefabricated parts (save 1 beam)

It was entirely livable. And in fact once built, Charles and Ray Eames never moved out.

It was great to see how well used it was.

It was Sinead's one most important destinations to visit on our trip.

Not a designer's non-cluttered minimal affair at all but a family home to be messed up and worn in.

Joshua Tree, California
9/30/2009 6:01:40 PM

I was told in a bar one night that Joshua Trees only grow in two places on the earth.

One is of course here, at the Joshua Tree Nathional Park,

The other is Israel.

Israelites believe the trees grow at the two gates.

The Gates to Heaven...

And the gates to Hell.

I'll let you guess which place they believe is which gate.

I tried to find this information online to varify but could not find it.

I will recount this story anyway as bar room knowledge has it's own truth that I prefer.

This that I found was interesting though: There is concern about the ability of the trees to migrate to favorable climates due to the extinction of the giant Shasta ground sloth (Nothrotheriops shastensi) 13,000 years ago; ground sloth dung has been found to contain Joshua tree leaves, fruits, and seeds, suggesting that the sloths might have been key to the tree's dispersal.

Portland South West, Oregon

Stopped by Portland-based artist Thomas Stavnes' studio.
It was filled with great work old and new and some work by his peers too.

Norwegian trolls from Thomas' childhood.
