The Gastrotypographicalassemblage
conceived by the then director of design at CBS, Lou Dorfsman is still to this day one of the most ambitious typographic experiments ever undertaken. A sculptural wall of type 33 feet long and 8 ft high comprising of over 1450 letter individually sculpted and hand set. Crazy. After doing the initial comps by hand, Dorfsman enlisted the assistance of mate and typo guru Herb Lubalin with final hand lettering done by Tom Carnase. Over the years the wall has suffered quite a bit of damage but thankfully, the non-for-profit The Centre for Design Study has taken it upon themselves to restore the wall to its original beauty.
