Aussie Hip Hop this week

| Its been the week for highlighting Australia's aspiring Hip Hop superstars. The internets newest phenom Bangs ( bag raiders remix out on Modular?) and the arguably less skilled Rae have put the spotlight on Melbourne city. So I thought it only fair that someone put forward a little bit of Sydney talent.
I saw this 2.L.O.C.O clip on The Serps blog a year ago. The mad rhymes and even specialer special effects pretty much flawed me. After asking round, I found out 2.L.O.C.O has been in the Sydney scene for a while. Will Sydney old blood step to Melbourne's new money???
The prospect of new generation of Aussie elite throwing down at next years Mc Battle must have JJJ and Nova frothing. Yeeah..

Rocksteady - The Roots of Reggae
10/29/2009 9:36:42 AM
| The Tiger Distribution blog is always worth a look. The guys are absolute rulers and they distribute some of the raddest street wear brands in the world so you know they're always going to find some cool shit.
A while back I read a post about one of their local WeActivists who came in to the Tiger office and hit them up for a bunch of WeSC headphones to take to Jamaca for a documentary on Reggae he was involved in. After initially calling bullshit on his claim, it checked out to be legit. Actually more than legit, this documentary looks amazing.
Rocksteady : the Roots of Reggae takes you to the reggae birthplace and through the early days of the movement as told by the originators. Visually stunning with tunes to match. Hopefully this one pops up at a festival in Australia sometime soon...

MC Bangs – West Side's finest
10/27/2009 11:38:45 AM

| Bangs is tiiight. These ring tone beats are not easily forgotten. Basically, this could be the best thing I've ever seen. Words cannot explain. It would be a crime not to share this.. but while checking his blog be sure to click the link to the Sudanese refugee articles. My bet is that Bangs probably comes from a background that would make a lot of other rappers whimper and cry. Thanks Toby. For more Bangs check Toblers article here.

US Army - The biggest graffiti cleaners in the world
10/13/2009 11:50:03 AM
After a bunch or guys form MTA crew got busted recently. Los Angeles councillors and the US Army Corps decided to spend $4 Million of the US government stimulus to get out there and remove what they call the worlds biggest graffiti tag. They're doing this to, wait for it... do their bit for climate change? This video is bizarre and seems more reminiscent of an out take from a graffiti vid with a bunch of writers hopped up on testosterone and fumes than responsible lawmakers...

WEBUYYOURKIDS at Monster Children Gallery
10/12/2009 4:44:09 PM
| Joe from Monster Children just sent me a flyer for the show at the MC gallery this Friday. If your in Sydney this looks well worth checking out. So when Friday swings round grab a king brown and join the art appreciating revelers spilling out on to Riley street after appreciating some of Sydney's finest illustrators. About the Exhibition:Renowned Sydney based illustrators WEBUYYOURKIDS will present a much anticipated show at Monster Children Gallery in October. Titled ‘Trials’, the exhibition explores the duo’s fascination with witchcraft, bad luck, ill health, black cats and cheaply printed posters, flyers and magazines.
Themes of misinterpretation, bad judgement and injustice emerge through a series of screenprints, either in stark black and white or slabs of flat bright colour. There is a heavy nod to the pulp magazines, comics and schlock movie posters of the 1970s and the printing processes utilised in their mass execution.
WEBUYYOURKIDS is Biddy Maroney and Sonny Day, who began working together in 2005 illustrating gig posters. Since then they have worked mainly in the music industry producing tour art for such bands as Deerhunter, Dappled Cities, Blonde Redhead and Les Savy Fav. They have made album art work for Paul Dempsey, The Holy Soul and Youth Group and video clips for Washington and Belles Will Ring. Their illustrations have appeared in Wired magazine, Business Week and the New York Times, and in 2008 they were nominated for a SMAC (Sydney Music, Arts & Culture) Award for Best Visual Artist. |

Brooklyn's Clock Tower penthose
10/1/2009 3:06:08 PM
| Still a little gob smacked by the $15.4 Million sale of the Melbournian Penthouse, I recently stumbled across a few articles about Brooklyn's most expensive apartment - The Clock Tower Penthouse in DUMBO.
Dumbo (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass) the neighborhood nestled between Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, was developed in the 80's by architect David Walentas's management company and is home to one of NY's premiere art districts and communities.... as well as the Clock Tower Penthouse which was recently listed for sale at a cool $25 Million US.
Built in a converted cardboard box factory the 3 level home has four 14 ft electronically synced clocks and views across New York Harbor. I don't think this particular building has too many free artist spaces left ......

Street Struck - The Big L Story
9/1/2009 11:57:30 AM
Just checked the first trailer for the Bog L documentary "Street Struck". Shot in a straight up documentary style, with a long list of interviews from a list of influential rappers, Street Struck is set for release to mark the 10th anniversary of Big L's death. You only have to hear the first track drop in the intro and Big L's genius is instantly remembered.

Crips and Bloods – made in America
8/28/2009 11:52:13 AM
| Growing up in Australia and searching for all that was was remotely related to graffiti and hip hop, I repeatedly ans some what misguidedly watched the early nineties cinematic gold that was Hollywood's portrayal of LA gang culture. Movies like Colors and Boyz N The Hood gave a glimpse into a world that I would only ever nervously laugh at years later as I drove past an LA freeway exit to Crenshaw Blvd.
So, I was pretty stoked to hear about Stacey Peralta's Crips and Bloods : Made in America.
After Peralta's efforts with Dogtown And Z-Boys I'm guessing this docco is set to give a pretty balanced portrayal of current day US gang violence. Narrated by Forest Whitacker with Quincey D Jones as executive producer, I'm hoping that this makes out for an Australian screening sometime soon. Don't know if Ice T made to on to the soundtrack though...

One Penthouse All Melbourne
8/19/2009 12:06:44 PM
I felt like I was watching a clip from LA when I saw Melbourne real estate agents Kay and Burton advertising the sale of The Penthouse Melbournian on St Kilda rd. They've taken their shit to the next level and created this vid showcasing the many, many killer aspects of this less than humble abode and the not quite architectural model. Got 15 Million? Then drop in on this mack pad! Gotta love that tag line... One penthouse. All Melbourne.
