South at Monster Children
5/28/2009 8:55:37 PM
Monster Children Gallery presents South
An exhibition by seven contemporary artists working in Melbourne.

Opening night: THURSDAY 4TH JUNE 6.00PM

Exhibition continues from 5TH JUNE - 27TH JUNE, 2009.

Seven of the most interesting and acclaimed new artists working in and out of Melbourne today will feature in the group exhibition titled ‘South’ at Monster Children Gallery.

Presenting multi-disciplinary work through sculpture, drawing, photography, painting and mixed media, the exhibition will showcase the varying influences, backgrounds and experiences of artists Martin Bell, Christopher Day, Nathan Gray, Misha Hollenbach, Dylan Martorell, Riley Payne and Amber Wallis.

In assembling these artists, Monster Children Gallery aims to represent in part the current wave of exciting talent emerging from Melbourne.

Having been nurtured by the energetic and supportive Melbourne arts community and the many small galleries, museums and artist run initiatives which thrive in the city, each of the seven practitioners is now gaining momentum and regard for their individual practice, both here and overseas.

Originally from New Zealand, painter Amber Wallis was the winner of the prestigious Brett Whiteley Traveling Art Scholarship in 2008. Her work has been exhibited widely both in Australia and overseas and has received extensive coverage in the national and metropolitan arts media.

Christopher Day’s unique take on urban still life photographv has gained him considerable acclaim, injecting an absurdist intelligence and an understated wit into the genre. He has been featured in numerous publications including Photofile and Hijacked and held his first solo exhibition, A Little Boob, at Victoria Park Gallery in 2008.

Dylan Martorell is an artist and musician who has been working commercially as an illustrator for four years. His music and art practice frequently intersect and merge together, and he has worked for Tokion, Vitra, Nieves and the New York Times. His illustrations for the Sydney Theatre Company production The Wonderful World of Dissocia currently appear in the Company’s season program.

Martin Bell’s 2008 book ‘My Birthday Party’ attracted critical reviews ranging from “one of the greatest things to come out of Melbourne in the past year’ to ‘the most awesome book ever made’. The collection of photos, drawing and collage that chronicled the installation’ that took over his apartment fast became a collectors item and established Bell as one of the most exciting artists working in Melbourne today.

Nathan Gray is an artist and musician whose exquisitely detailed assemblages incorporating screen print, collage and drawing have resulted in a series of breathtaking exhibitions both in Australia and overseas. He recently completed a residency at the Sacatar foundation in Bahia, Brazil, and a commission for The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art’s ‘Mirka at Tolarno’ space.

Working solo and as one half of the duo Perks and Mini, Misha Hollenbach’s books, art, toys, and fashion have earned him a global cult following and he has exhibited extensively both in Australia and overseas.

In and Out, No Funny Business by Dan Moynihan
5/26/2009 2:44:24 PM
In and Out, No Funny BusinessOne of the greatest tricks the devil ever pulled was… just after smoko!

Dan Moynihan’s latest exhibition In and Out, No Funny Business introduces us to two of his lesser-known passions; the heist movie genre and a fascination with lunchroom architecture and etiquette. Rolling on from the mountainous ambition displayed in his previous project (Still Sitting Still, Utopian Slumps, Jan 2009), Moynihan has devised elaborate ways for the installation to sprawl beyond the confines of the gallery. Dan’s multi-layered installations persistently attempt to hammer holes in reality, providing his audience a peek of alternative worlds. Perhaps even a walk through if it all goes according to plan.

In and Out, No Funny Business - Dan Moynihan

Whats-her-face is now a celebrity according to Nine MSN
5/20/2009 4:31:47 PM
Surprise, surprise... found this HERE.

Outspoken Sydney shooting witness Clare Werbeloff has become an overnight internet sensation — so much so, she has engaged a PR representative to deal with the flood of media interest. The 19-year-old found fame online after giving her politically incorrect eyewitness account of a Kings Cross shooting to Nine News.

The resulting public attention has apparently been so overwhelming for Ms Werbeloff, who is from Sydney's northern beaches, that's she's been forced to turn to a PR agency to manage her"She's been inundated with calls this morning," spokesman Adam Abrams told ninemsn this afternoon.

"We will be releasing a statement tomorrow."Around 3am on Sunday morning, a man in his 20s was shot twice in the leg outside a strip club on Darlinghurst Road at Kings Cross. (Read more: Man shot twice in Kings Cross attack)

Overnight TV camera crews sought out witnesses and it was Clare's frank description of two men who began the argument that pushed the story into the stratosphere. "There were these two wogs fighting," she told Nine News. "The fatter wog said to the skinnier wog, 'Oi bro, you slept with my cousin'. "And the other one said 'Nah man, I didn't for s***, eh' and the other one goes, 'I will call on my fully sick boys, eh'. "And then [he] pulled out a gun and went [gun-cocking sound] BOOM." The shooter, who was wearing a black hooded top and jeans, fled police on foot while the victim was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.

Her video interview attracted more than 100,000 views, a Facebook fan group with over 1800 members has appeared and even t-shirts featuring Clare quotes are available online. The group, "Clare the Kings Cross bogan fan club", has spawned internet memes such as ironic motivational posters featuring the young woman and two other people interviewed on the night. Forums are abuzz with threads on the video, and bloggers have been posting the video attached to their commentary on the event. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!
