Obama's greatest challenge

Sometimes, Americans make real easy targets of themselves, and you feel kinda bad making fun of them. You know, fish in a barrel and all that.

So in the spirit of fairness, and 'cos we know ya'll aren't like this, I'll put it out there that I guess it's possible, maybe, that this woman could be from another country.

Maybe.

I guess.

It's possible.

I'm just sayin'.

... and a late update from a friend who saw the title of this blog and sent me an image that needs to be shared:

Comeback of the year
9/21/2009 10:18:26 PM

Maybe I'm overstating their case just a little, but then again, maybe I should just turn my speakers up.

It would be understandable (but a pity) if the punk-funk and disco-type djs overlook this simply because it's so hard to get your head around elderly white rockers suddenly becoming this goddamn funky.

A California road trip I wish I was on
9/4/2009 3:34:49 PM

Often, my job means sending friends on trips to really fun places, then trying not to be too jealous as they have a gas and I sit in the office. I know: sucks to be me.

This month, the trip I'm not on is from San Fransisco to San Diego in an RV with the six best Australian surfers under-21. It's some consolation that my associate editor knows his way around a well-written blog, and has with him some super-talented lensmen.

It is dead flat in California right now. When waves appear, these kids will go absolutely bat-shit crazy in the water, which will hopefully make for some entertaining video, if surfie-type-movies are something you find entertaining.

Till then, I'm going to soak up the shots of San Fran and listen to this song, which I'm hoping to use in the film we're making. For the first 40 seconds, it's a bit poor-man's Peter, Bjorn & John, then the chorus kicks in and blam: Surf guitar bliss. It is impossible to feel sorry for yourself while this is playing.

It is also impossible to believe The Drums haven't been signed yet (and that they are from Brooklyn), but there you go.

More fun with frothing groms here.

The definition of dedication
8/31/2009 5:45:53 PM
Noticed a story doing the rounds about AP photographer Emilio Morenatti, a photojournalist who's left foot had to be amputated after he was injured in a bomb blast in Afghanistan. That didn't mean he stopped shooting.

A little more at Gizmodo.

Celebrities - is there anything they can't do
8/27/2009 4:20:38 PM
I should really call this post Celebrities - is there anything we can't do to pictures of them in Photoshop.

Because, friends, if you thought you'd seen enough bad paparazzi shots on the internet to last you a lifetime, then maybe think again. The internets just won't stop serving you treats like these.

Someone took a photo of Brad Pitt riding a bicycle, and someone else photoshopped the bike out.

Course they did.

They did it to Vince Vaughn too. He's pretty stoked about it.

 So is Jake G.

I think this is my favourite thing on the internet this week.

Nice work HolyTaco.com

Fixed-wheel chicks rule
8/20/2009 1:12:00 PM
Think you know everything there is to know about riding fixies? Maybe you're completely over the whole deal, and if you see one more kid in cut-off denim and one of those little cycling caps your brain will burst into smithereens.

Allow this to restore your faith in all things good and great about cycling.

Yes, it is more than six minutes long. But there is not one second of it that isn't amazing. If you've got even the slightest interest in cycling or flatland BMX, or it's just been a while since you've been impressed by anything inside of a high school gym, I defy you not to be floored. Maybe I'm going over the top just a little, but these girls are superstars.

Quincy Delight Jones
8/17/2009 12:39:39 PM
With increased attention on Michael Jackson's catalog, it's nice to see some of that love spread towards Quincy Jones - the man behind the boards on Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad.

Quincy Jones' production (and playing) extends way beyond MJ - The Dude was producing Frank Sinatra and Count Basie records in the 60s - and this great Quincy Jones tribute mix by DJ Spinna is a top example.

Focusing mostly on Quincy's jazz and instrumental funk, you're sure to spot a few samples you know, but even if you're not of a mind to trainspot, the mix is still a great cure for them start-of-the-week, nothing-but-instant-in-the-cupboard-and-skim-milk-in-the-fridge blues.

If you've got a spare ten minutes (and are of a trainspotting disposition), this tour of DJ Spinna’s studio is also worth a check. Guy has impeccable taste/production skills/ability to move that crowd, and is genuinely one of the loveliest gents in the biz, which comes through here.

The things you'd do for that record collection ... I'm getting a little giddy just thinking about it. (AND he's got Todd Terry's hand-me-down SP 1200!).

"Right now, I know it doesn't really matter any more, but I like records, I like to dig."

Thanks the Smoking Section for the download.

Cosmic Egg, Of Course
8/14/2009 2:05:11 PM
Shortly after hometime yesterday afternoon, I received an email with the subject: Check out the new wolfmother cover!

There was no other text in the email.

Just this image.

If you’ve been listening to the wireless this morning you’ll have probably heard the lead single from the album as it was released to radio today.

I haven’t, because I’m not, though I’m fairly confident the single's press release is probably spot on when it says the tune is full of “bludgeoning drums” and “is sure to be inescapable very, very soon.”

I’d imagine it also has a widdly-woo guitar solo, maybe a slight over-use of the wah-wah pedal, but I’m just guessing here.

Enough about the music. Can we just dig this cover for a minute? Their first record was a fine and proud entry into the pantheon of ridiculous prog-rock album artwork, what with its Frank Frazetta sea-lizard and booby-serpent-lady rising out of the depths. But this … this is awesome.

It’s an egg … and it’s cosmic. You can tell it’s cosmic because A) it’s really big, and B) it’s in the sky.
And there’s a small child with his shirt off (even though it looks cold out there, on the moors) just staring at it.

Regular Loungers will remember this article a few months ago and immediately recognise something missing from Wolfmother's new album cover.

What it needs to truly make it soar into the stratosphere of prog cover ridiculousness is an animal. The more ridiculous the better. It's early days in Wolfmother's career, but if they really want to climb the great prog-cover-art-mountain, they've got a long way to go.

Lots of people on the internet equals good things
8/5/2009 12:48:26 PM
Surfing early this morning I did something I really shouldn't have, landed on my fins, cut my foot, busted a brand new board I was just deciding I really liked, and came to work in an most unpleasant humour.

This:

got the sides of my mouth twitching upwards a little, and brought me round.

Sour's film clip isn't going to set anyone's world on fire or generate OK Go-type web traffic. But as an example of crowd-sourcing, or just mobilising your fanbase to great effect, it's a top effort, and worth three-odd minutes of your time (tho' nothing lost by skipping past the first minute if you're time-poor).

This, on the other hand:

is just really, really dumb, and probably not worth two minutes of anyone's time. But, in and of itself it's also a great example of the seemingly endless well of ingenuity found online, and such and such.

Thanks Mark Hurst for the thoughtful link, and Will Smith for the dumb one you'll watch first.
