I've skated for the last 25 years and I'm man enough to say that it too was a bandwagon in the 80s... ie The bones Brigade in Police Academy... Christian Slater / Gleaming the Cube. Skateboards sold at Kmart, jump ramp demos at shopping centres. BMX was the same, every kid on the block had a bmx with pegs and rotor even if it was for using on their paper round. Rad although a cult classic was a fad teen movie... as was BMX Bandits. and there's nothing to be ashamed of there... like I said before true enthusiasts don't give a fuck. Just because a bandwagon exists doesn't mean you're a part of it... I think so anyway

I'm definitely not dissing flatland BMX but wasn't it pretty much one of the biggest bandwagons of the 80s? Don't get me wrong as I've always had massive respect for the sport and the bikes... just calling it as I see it. I think there are scene queens and genuine enthusiasts with anything really.
